Butterfly
- Swum on the breast (shoulders at or past vertical toward the breast).
- Forward start is used.
- Unlimited kicks after start, but only one arm pull to bring swimmer to the surface.
- Head must break the surface by the 15-meter mark after start and each turn.
- Thereafter, swimmer must remain on the surface until after the next turn.
- All movements of the arms must be simultaneous.
- Once a stroke is begun, the arms must then recover over the surface of the water.
- All movements of the legs also must be simultaneous.
- Uses a downward butterfly kick; alternating or breaststroke kicks are not allowed.
- Must see the alternation of the feet during the kick to charge the swimmer with an alternating kick.
- At the turns and finish, both hands must touch the wall simultaneously at, above or below the water surface; hands need not be in the same horizontal plane at touch.
